Digital
Upgrades
AES
is
currently
assisting
power
utilities to replace aging analog
equipment with digital control systems. Our knowledgeable staff has
extensive experience in plant digital control and monitoring design and
implementation, including the interface between digital control
technology and field equipment. Our broad technical knowledge of
introducing new digital equipment into a power plant allows us to
develop effective integrated strategies and ensure compliance with
published industry standards.

Obsolescence

ES staff
has experience with instrumentation and control (I&C) modernization
projects in a number of nuclear power plants. These projects
involve upgrading the original and aged analog I&C control and
protection systems, along with the replacement of aged computer systems
that mainly support process information for plant operation (Plant
Process Computers (PPC)). Major drivers for the modernization of
I&C systems are the need for more cost effective power production,
smooth operation, improved competitiveness, and for replacing of
obsolete equipment.
AES staff has
experience in Human Factors Engineering in applying what is known about
human capabilities and limitations to the design of products,
processes, systems, and work environments. AES is familiar with
industry standards and have successfully implemented the design of
systems having a human interface, including hardware and software. Its
application to system design improves ease of use, system performance,
reliability, and user satisfaction, while reducing operational errors,
operator stress, training requirements, user fatigue, and product
liability. AES has recently been involved with control room,
Simulator/Technical Support Center upgrades at various nuclear
facilities.
AES has been assisting NPPs with a broad
spectrum of analog and digital control systems projects, from
development of detailed plant design change packages, to consulting on
digital system V&V program design and implementation that includes
EMI/RFI and Software related evaluations. AES has performed work using
the IEEE 7-4, IEEE-603, IEEE-1012, IEEE-1074 and EPRI TR-102323
standards.
